Job summary

West Ham United Foundation are looking for a degree level candidate to assist the Football Development Manager, and Behaviour Interventions Manager and Vice Principal at The Hathaway Academy, to fully engage disaffected students within their education, and maximise their opportunities post year 11 at The Hathaway Academy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Work closely with disaffected students to ensure they access their learning, and engage positively in their lessons.
  • Fully support students who face challenges that impact upon their behaviours.
  • Work on a 1:1, group and in class basis, to ensure all levels of students are fully supported whilst in the academy.
  • Encourage positive choices with students who you directly work with, raising aspirations and their future outlook.
  • Integrate students who may be facing, or have faced challenging circumstances, back into learning and lessons.
  • Always relate conversations back to positive outcomes, choices and academic success.
  • Cover in the inclusion room at specified times throughout the day/week, upholding all expectations.
  • Challenge students who fail to comply and adhere to the academy expectations.
  • Contact, and/or meet, parents/carers of students where there is a concern.
  • Formulate bespoke action plans and targets for students who you specifically work with, and review these on a weekly basis.
  • Ensure all activities are delivered safely and are age appropriate.
  • Follow Academy protocols and procedures.
  • Enhance the education experience for students who face barriers or emotional/behaviour difficulties, playing an integral role within the Pastoral Support Team.
  • Support students with their academic studies and enhance their performance across all subjects.
  • Outreach work to develop the physical participation levels of students at the academy.
  • Work with local primary school, running workshops at the academy

Safeguarding:

  1.   1. It is a requirement for staff to follow the Club’s Safeguarding reporting procedures to report without delay, allegations of abuse, poor practice or which is or may, impact on the welfare of a child, young person or adult at risk. After contacting and taking guidance from the Safeguarding Team, staff must use the Club’s Child Protection Online Management System (CPOMS ) to record the concern within 24 hours unless directed to do otherwise.

Employees will be recruited and selected, promoted and trained on the basis of objective criteria.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have skills and experience in the following areas: - Essential (E) Desirable (D)

Education/Qualifications/Experience:

  • Youth Work qualification or experience (E)
  • Experienced in engaging young people from hard to reach groups, especially within the Foundation target area (E)
  • Experience of working with young people in different settings e.g. youth and sports clubs, education, street work (D)
  • Working with external partners e.g. local authorities, youth offending and youth services (D)
  • Mentoring qualification or experience (E)
  • Enhancing the progress and success of young people (E)
  • Mental Health Awareness Training (D)
  • Safeguarding qualification and First Aid qualification (D)
  • FA Football Coaching Qualification Level 2 or alternative Level 2 Sports qualification (D)
  • Facilitating sports and physical activity as a method of engagement (D)

Abilities/Skills/Knowledge:

  • An understand of how to deliver sessions to mixed ability groups (E)
  • Knowledge of methodologies to engage young people with disabilities (E)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of youth work (E)
  • An understanding of the issues and barriers impacting young people, especially within the Foundations target area (E)
  • Use and experience with CPOMS as a safeguarding platform. (D)
  • Must be able to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication / presentation skills, which are culturally competent (E)
  • ICT Literate (E)
  • Able to work within a diverse community and draw on individual strengths to promote individual development (E)
  • Able to communicate with participants and the public (E)
  • Good organisational skills, able to prioritise and work within deadlines (E)
  • Commitment to develop and improve own performance and CPD (E)
  • Ability to work independently and supervise if required (E)
  • Strong commitment to quality service delivery (E)
  • Ability to get on with a wide range of people (E)
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate programme delivery (E)
