Job summary
An exciting opportunity has become available for an excellent Strength & Conditioning practitioner to join West Ham United’s Academy Physical Development team.

Working as a key member of the U9-U16 multidisciplinary team, the role involves overseeing physical development support to the Schoolboy programme (U9-U16). Specifically, the post holder will lead the physical development support for the U15/U16 cell, oversee support to the U9-U14 age groups providing specific individual programming to selected U9-U14 individuals and lead the collection, utilisation and reporting of growth and maturation processes within the schoolboy programme. The role may involve supervision of part time/sessional staff and/or student placements Physical Development Coaches.

The Lead YDP/FP Physical Development Coach should be passionate about long term athlete development and delivering a physical pathway to support long term player development. The position requires excellent technical skills with the ability to flex delivery to deliver appropriately to a variety of age group players. The expectations for the role include achieving a genuine, measurable impact on the physical characteristics of our players, while also providing a positive contribution to the immediate MDT and The Academy as a whole.

Our 3 key areas of physical development impact are:

• Improving player capability by improving physical performance.
• Ensuring players are resilient and robust enough to be available to train and play as much as possible at their level and the levels above.
• Providing a positive and meaningful contribution to MDT practice by offering information and insight.

Key Responsibilities:

Schoolboy Programme Overall
• Responsible for overseeing the U9-U16 Physical Development programme including contributing to the development and leading the implementation of the physical development model for schoolboy players progressing towards the Professional Development Phase.
• Lead on the collection, analysis/interpretation and reporting of growth and maturation-related data within the schoolboy programme to provide information and insight to support player development.
• Lead on the planning, delivery and reporting of physical profiling to the schoolboy programme in a phase-relevant manner in line with department methodology.
• Provide physical development support as needed to U9-U14 groups with emphasis on individual programmes to support selected player IDP needs.
• Contribute to and support the planning, delivery and review of return to play programmes for FDP/YDP players as necessary ensuring an effective and efficient transition of injured players into the playing squad’s performance environment.

U15/U16 Physical Development Support
• Lead the planning, delivery and review of physical development support (on & off-pitch) to the Under 15/U16s age group cell on a whole squad and individual player basis as needed.
• Lead on the planning, delivery and reporting of physical profiling to the U15/U16 age groups in line with department methodology.
• Lead on providing matchday physical performance support to the U15/U16 age groups.
• Implement monitoring processes (workload, perceived load, wellbeing, readiness) with the U15/U16 cell including data collection, analysis-interpretation and feedback/reporting to inform MDT communications and decision making.
• Work in collaboration with the U15/U16s Coaches in the planning, programming and review of football technical/tactical/physical training ensuring an integrated and systematic approach to football physical conditioning.

Football Science & Medicine Department
• On an ongoing basis, act as an ambassador for the Physical Development department framework and methodology while contributing to its implementation and evolution.

Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have skills and experience in the following areas: -

Essential (E) Desirable (D)

Education/Qualifications/Experience:
• BSc in Sport Science/Strength & Conditioning or a related area (E)
• MSc in Sport Science/Strength & Conditioning or a related area (E)
• UKSCA Accreditation or ability to achieve within 6-12 months (D)
• BASES Accreditation or ability to achieve within 6-12 months (D)
• Emergency First Aid (FA EFAIF L2) (D)
• At least 2-3 years previous experience of working with elite development athletes (E)

• Previous experience of working with coaches in designing and delivering training programmes to achieve technical/tactical and physical outcomes. (E)

• Experience of leading people. (D)
• Experience using PMA. (D)
Abilities/Skills/Knowledge:
• Ability to plan and deliver S&C programmes to achieve a genuine performance impact. (E)
• Excellent understanding of growth & maturation and its implications on the development of athletes. (E)

• Ability to flex delivery approach to successfully motivate and engage young people (u9-U16 age players. (E)
• Effective and appropriate communication/relationship building skills. (E)
• Excellent understanding of long-term physical development (practically and theoretically). (E)
• Ability to use strength diagnostics/physical profiling to inform training programmes. (E)

• Detailed understanding of, and ability to use monitoring systems related to physical performance (workload, wellbeing, neuromuscular state etc). (D)

• Understanding of the expectations of a Category 1 Academy in accordance with the EPPP (D)
