Job summary

An exciting opportunity has become available at West Ham United Football Club and are seeking an Head of Education to manage and lead all aspects of education required by the Premier League and Football Club.

Key Responsibilities:

• Developing appropriate and bespoke scholar education programmes to be studied alongside SEP Apprenticeship.
• Developing positive and professional relationships with the schools, Academy players and parents.
• Monitor the academic performance of each Academy player every 12 weeks, focusing on attainment, progress and learning behaviours.
• Diagnose the effectiveness of education provision and implement strategies to progess the department.
• Support Academy players and schools on an individual level through the use of intervention strategies and promotion of positive student outcomes.
• Manage the different training models employed at the Club, ensuring that academic development is not compromised by involvement in football programme.
• Ensure that the Academy maintains the highest standards with reference to academic outcomes and quality assurance of academic courses / assessment.
• Develop the performance of the Education Department in synchronisation with the Premier League Youth Development Rules and Audit Framework.

Standard Responsibilities:

Weekly:
• To maintain accurate and up-to-date tracking of the attainment, effort and progress of all Academy players within the academic setting.
• To manage the teaching staff across all phases of the Academy, ensuring that teaching meets the needs of each individual and promotes positive student outcomes.
• To undertake all administrative aspects of the role to the highest standard.
• To organise compensatory education to address losses in education; ensuring that this is staffed by appropriately qualified pracitioners.
• To support learners on an individual basis, through the use of mentoring and intervention strategies in the pursuit of promoting positive student outcomes.
• To communicate professionally with Academy players and parents to discuss / review individual academic performance.
• To liaise with schools to organise learner attendance of Academy based provision and subsequent compensatory support to address losses in education.
• To chair Education Department meetings which provide a platform to discuss pertinent aspects


8 Weekly Blocks:
• To review individual learner performance in relation to attainment, progress and learning behaviours in synchronisation with timescales detailed in the PL YD Rules.
• To communicate with schools to discuss individual academic performance.
• To track the progress of all Academy players through the correspondence with individual schools and collection of summative comments and attainment data.
• To manage partnerships with education establishments, Awarding Bodies and the Premier League.
• To conduct observations of teaching and learning whilst offering developmental support to the teaching staff in pursuit of quality assuring provision and improving pedagogical skills.
• To attend all Academy Management Team meetings and undertake an active role in the development of the Academy.
• To review the progress of the Education Department towards the Key Performance Indicators, implementing strategies to develop provision.

Annual:

Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have skills and experience in the following areas: - Essential (E) Desirable (D)

Education/Qualifications/Experience:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) (E)
• FA Safeguarding and Protecting Children (E)
• Educated to a minimum of undergraduate degree level (E)
• Experience within similar education role (E)
• Experience within Category 1 Academy (D)
Abilities/Skills/Knowledge:
• Effective and appropriate communication/relationship building skills. (E)
• Understanding of the expectations of a Category 1 Academy in accordance with the EPPP (D)
• Understanding of statistics related to performance measurement (D)
• Excellent IT, communication and presentation skills (E)
• Ability to engage with a diverse range of students, both within both a group and one-to-one setting (E)
• Ability to plan engaging sessions that are relevant and appropriate for a formal learning environment (E)


• Ability to both manage programme delivery and contribute to strategic developments (E)
• Ability to develop good professional relationships with colleagues, employers, other outside agencies, alongside a flexible approach to working hours (i.e. evening and weekend work as needed, sometimes at short notice) (E)
• Understanding of, and commitment to, improving student experience and effective learning (E)
