At Manchester United our aim is to Win the United Way – and the quality of our behind-the scenes team sets us apart from the competition.

Our people are as committed to the success of the company as the players are to winning trophies. We offer a unique and exciting working environment, excellent training, with recognition and rewards for the part each individual plays. Sounding good so far?

Where this fits in:

Manchester United is more than just a football club, it’s a global community for fans. The Digital Products & Experiences Group (DP&E) within MUFC is responsible for creating and delivering personalised and timely products, services and experiences for our fans driving deeper relationships and connections from the first time they see a team in red walk on to the hallowed Old Trafford pitch.

Where you fit in:

As a Data Scientist you will help us to connect to and understand our fans across the globe, and how they want to engage with the club; to improve fan experience; and to identify strategic opportunities for increasing reach, valuable engagement & delivering lifetime value. You will be working as part of the Analytics Team with close cross functional collaboration with marketing, CRM, product & the other members of the DP&E team.

What we’d like you to do:

  • Set the agenda for commercial data science, focussing on the high-leverage problems which include:
  • Analysis of fan data to build engagement and connection.
  • Updating our approach to calculation of lifetime value and attribution.
  • Predictive modelling on impact of business changes on KPIs.
  • Report on performance of campaigns & notable activity identifying insights so that the strategy can be made optimal.
  • Derive insights and make recommendations for content, product, marketing, and fan data to help the team boost engagement and lifetime value.
  • Communicate findings and ideas effectively to a variety of stakeholders, including senior leadership.
  • Share insights across the business to promote data-driven decision-making and establish oneself as a thought leader and Club insights expert.

What we’d like you to bring to the role:
In an ideal world, you would bring most of these skills and experiences:

  • Prior experience of working in a similar role, creating commercial insights from data
  • Technical experience of
    • programming languages (Python is preferrable but R also considered), and data tools (SQL especially)
    • data visualisation tools (Power BI currently in use),
    • modern machine learning processes which address the relevant problem spaces (eg segmentation, attribution, CLV etc)
    • cloud data architecture (Azure in use)
    • good software engineering practices
  • A persuasive way of presenting insights and data-led recommendations in a clear, understandable and actionable way.

It would be great if you could also bring:

  • Your vision for how to embed good data science into an organisation
  • Understanding of propensity, attribution & lifetime value modelling
  • Experience of mentoring or coaching
