The Football Association [The FA] is the not-for-profit governing body of football in England. It is responsible for promoting and developing every level of the game, from grassroots through to the professional game, and generates significant revenue to support investment into English football each year.

The FA oversees England international teams across men's, women's, youth and disability football, as well as running the National League System and FA Competitions including the Emirates FA Cup, Barclays FA Women's Super League, FA Women's Championship, and Vitality Women's FA Cup, and the world-class facilities of Wembley Stadium and St. George's Park, all with a purpose to Unite the Game and Inspire the Nation.

The Role

Key member of the Behavioural Insight & Business Analytics (BIBA) team, the role's primary responsibility is to build, organise, run reporting and advanced analytics of data held within digital systems across The FA to inspire, inform and enable evidence-based decision making.

Key Accountabilities

  • Execute the defined data analytics workplan (set each season) applying an understanding of appropriate analytical techniques to realise planned objectives, and ensuring delivery within agreed timeframes
  • Develop and deliver regular standardised reporting utilising internal and external data for divisions across the organisation (aligned to The FA's strategic objectives)
  • Construct and apply machine learning models to maximise the impact of the data The FA holds to inform business decisions through relevant forecasting techniques
  • Conduct advanced data analytics, incl. advanced statistical techniques, of internal and external data to generate insight and inform recommendations
  • Deliver data preparation, integration, profiling and cleansing for model development to identify user behaviour amongst The FA's key audiences, specifically identifying causal impact and attribution and building / benchmarking key metrics
  • Utilise data visualisation tools (Power BI) to share insights across the business
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders across the business to develop detailed analytics requirements and delivery plans and work directly with Digital Technology and IT to deliver against these plans
  • Communicate insight and recommendations to the senior management team and the broader organisation
  • Be an advocate for data (and its value) and proactively upskill those across the organisation as to its use and deployment (incl. adoption and usage of reports and dashboards)
  • Be an expert on the data sources and systems at The FA, developing, analysing and monitoring key metrics and reports to identify risks and opportunities for the organisation
  • Inform and drive the Insight and Analytics agenda across The FA
  • Support the Head of Strategy, Insight & Data in mentoring team members and establishing best practice principles
  • Execute additional tasks as required in order to meet FA Group changing priorities.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures to ensure the highest standards of health, safety and wellbeing can be maintained.

What we are looking for

Essential

  • BS, MS, or PhD in related quantitative discipline or equivalent work experience.
  • Experienced in writing complex data flows using Python, R, SQL, Spark and Scala scripts
  • Experienced in using Apache Spark, Google BigQuery and/or Hadoop, for data processing and aggregation on big data platforms/environments.
  • Experience of analytics platforms such as Azure ML & Analytics Services.
  • Fluency in producing automated, visual analytical solutions using interactive visualisation tools e.g. Power BI.
  • Experience of delivering machine learning models to forecast KPIs with proven knowledge of ML techniques such as k-NN, Decision Forests, regression.
  • Experience in advanced statistical analysis and data analytics e.g. conjoint, segmentations, drivers analysis, turf analysis, max diff etc.
  • Excellent analytical skills, highly capable of interpreting data and generating meaningful insight and recommendations.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to present to SMT/Board level audiences.
  • Track record of project management and delivery.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of football / previous experience within the sport and event industry.
  • Experience of app and web analytics and the software currently available to mine these types of data sets e.g. Google Analytics and TalkWalker.
  • Experience working with version control system platforms such as GitHub.

Please be aware that unless you are on a homebased contract, your contract with The FA will specify a fixed location of either Wembley Stadium, St. George's Park or our Processing Centre.

We currently work within a hybrid working model whereby the expectation is to work from your contractual location for part of the week, and as and when required by the team. The remaining days can be worked remotely. We will continue to monitor this model and it may be adjusted in future if deemed necessary.
